But two of the slayers of Thingol escaped from the pursuit and in Nogrod told how Dwarves were slain by command of the Elven-king, who thus would cheat them of their just reward.
The Dwarves of Nogrod lamented the deaths of their kin and their great craftsmen and took thought of vengeance. Though the Dwarves of Belegost tried to dissuade them from their purpose, the Dwarves of Nogrod invaded Doriath.
On their return journey to the Blue Mountains , however, the Dwarves of Nogrod were assailed by a company that included Beren , his son Dior , and many Green-elves of Ossiriand.
Some of the Dwarves escaped from the battle, but they were ambushed in the slopes beneath Mount Dolmed by the Shepherds of the Trees.
Some stories from the first age tell of petty Dwarves who were called Noegyth Nibin. Those were Dwarves exiled from their homes during the Peace of Arda and were the first Dwarves to enter Beleriand.
Durin I enjoyed a very long life and lived through most of the First Age. Every now and then through the following ages a Dwarf was born of this line that was so alike to Durin that he was considered to be Durin reborn.
Prophecy told that Durin would be reborn seven times and the coming of Durin VII would mark the decline of the Dwarves.
Durin II was born in the Second Age. He was gifted with the seventh and most powerful of the Dwarven Rings of Power.
It was the Elven smith Celebrimbor and not Sauron who gave him the ring. The only apparent effect of the Dwarven rings was that the Dwarves became more greedy with gold lust, but they were not turned into wraiths like men.
Sauron tried to recover the rings. Two he reclaimed fairly soon and four ended up in dragon hoards. Of the Dwarves, few fought upon either side; but the kindred of Durin of Moria fought against Sauron.
In Third Age , after centuries of greedy digging for mithril and other minerals, the Dwarves woke a Balrog that was sleeping in the deeps of the Misty Mountains since the First Age.
The Dwarves fled Khazad-dum, which from then on was called Moria , which means "Black pit". For more than years the Dwarves of the Grey Mountains prospered until the Dragons in the far North started to gain strength.
There, they prospered for over years until the dragon Smaug descended in TA The King and his company went in exile South, while most of the survivors went to the Iron Hills.
Thus began the War of Dwarves and Orcs , in which the Dwarves destroyed all the Goblin strongholds in the Misty Mountains culminating to the great Battle of Azanulbizar where all the dwarven clans united.
The Goblin hosts issuing from Moria were strong and relentless until the arrival of fresh Dwarves of the Iron Hills. The Battle ended with the victory of Dwarves, but at great cost.
The Dwarven clans however were unwilling to repopulate Moria. Thorin gathered around him twelve dwarves , mostly from his own line, and was joined by Gandalf and Bilbo Baggins.
The Quest of Erebor ended with the death of Smaug. After a quarrel with the Men and Elves over the unguarded hoard, the Dwarves - assisted by those from the Iron Hills - united with the Men and Elves to fight the attacking Goblins and Wargs, in what was called the Battle of Five Armies , where Thorin was killed.
After the Battle of the Pelennor Fields , a force of 30, Longbeards and 20, Men of Dale held the Lonely Mountain in a similar siege against , Men of Rhun who had taken all of Brand 's lands, leaving only his capital city of Dale.
The Dwarves and Men of Dale stood for three days against the Easterlings, and once the news of Sauron's death spread to the Lonely Mountain the Easterlings retreated, having lost over , troops, as opposed to the defenders who lost 14, Dwarves and 12, Men.
The sturdy nature of the Mountain Rock, combined with the Dwarven masonry and the Dwarven quality of the defenders' weapons, reduced the hitting power of the Easterlings' two-armed catapults and semi-automatic ballistas, and allowed the defenders to drive the attackers from the Mountain and out of Brand's realm.
During the Fourth Age, which began after the destruction of Mordor and Sauron, Dwarves and Men re-forged their friendship. During this time, Dwarves from the Lonely Mountain helped rebuild cities in Gondor and the fortress of Helm's Deep , and some went to the newly established Dwarven realm of the Glittering Caves where Gimli was lord.
It was rumored that in FO , Gimli and Legolas boarded a ship that sailed down the river Anduin, and then sailed to Valinor.
Gimli was thus the only Dwarf to ever be permitted to cross to the Undying Lands. Dwarf-lords raising their rings. Dwarves were a short, stocky race, a little taller than hobbits but much broader and heavier.
Most Dwarves had thick, luxuriant beards in which they took great pride, and often forked or braided them and tucked them into their belts.
They seem to have favoured simple durable clothing, coloured hoods and heavy cloaks for travelling, and belts of gold or silver.
For battle their soldiers would have elaborately crafted armor and helmets, bearing various angles and styles that were trademarks of Dwarven crafting styles.
Their armor was masked with symbols after the manner of those used in forges for shielding the eyes that were hideous to look upon.
Dwarven women were alike in manner, voice and appearance to their menfolk. They were few in number, less than a third of all dwarf-kind, and they were seldom seen outside their own halls, often not venturing far due to their duties as caretakers and crafters in Dwarven society.
They typically only travelled when in great need, and they usually dressed similarly to Dwarf men. This often led other folk to believe there were no women among the Dwarves, that Dwarves grew from stone when created.
Few female Dwarven warriors were known, but some tales say that female Dwarves were as fierce as their male counterparts, especially in protecting their families and offspring.
Dwarves were usually monogamous, and fewer than one-third of Dwarven men took a wife, the rest busying themselves with their crafts.

The NPC days of the bearded axe-wielders are over — the age of the dwarves has come! System Requirements Windows. Minimum: Requires a bit processor and operating system OS: Window 7, 8, 8.
In this story all sides and races are tested against one another in the largest war known to Girdlegard. The Dwarves are divided into five parties, the firstlings, secondlings, thirdlings who are considered evil , fourthlings, and the fifthlings who were all wiped out many years before the setting of this tale.
There is a succession war happening between them as the ruler of the Dwarves as a whole is elderly, frail and close to death so a new leader must be chosen, however, powerful and evil forces are at work within the Dwarven home whether they know it or not and this leads to confusion and disarray on all sides.
Into this mess walks our hero, Tungdil. Tungdil is a dwarf who doesn't know his heritage. He was brought up by a wizard named Lot-Ionan and he was raised to know about diplomacy, scholarship and many other qualities unbeknown to most of Dwarven-kind.
These skills make him into the charismatic and relatable young dwarf that he is and we really see that these qualities lead him on his adventure.
Early in the book Tungdil is sent on a mission by Lot-Ionan to deliver something important and then to potentially reunite him with his family.
This journey happens to take him across a variety of the landscape and the dwarf gets his first tastes of battle early on. He meets a whole hosts of characters and becomes entwined in the succession war, despite knowing nothing of his lineage or of his particular Dwarven qualities.
He is then charged with a far bigger task when evil begins to sweep the land and a new enemy threatens to destroy everything good across the Kingdoms.
This tale is so richly woven and well-crafted that each of these characters I have mentioned above made an impression which stuck with me and I could tell them apart despite the close spelling for many of their names and they all had their own personalities and agendas.
The story is told following two major story lines, Tungdil's adventure is the main one, but the situation in the Secondling's Dwarven Kingdom with the uncertainty over the succession of the King is the other.
There are also a few extra chapters which give insight into a few areas which are in different parts of the world and this all comes together and links up nicely at the end.
What I really liked about this story was that it grows and it gets better as it grows with new people being introduced, new roles being fulfilled and a more awesome adventure happening before our very eyes.
The story which starts with a small Dwarf knowing little about his race ends with a bang and a cliffhanger for the next book too.
I would certainly recommend this series and I do intend to continue along with it because the loveable little characters have charmed a way into my heart now and I need to find out what happens next Oct 15, [Name Redacted] marked it as to-read.
Brothers of the mine, rejoice! Swing, swing, swing with me Raise your pick and raise your voice! Sing, sing, sing with me Down and down into the deep, Who knows what we'll find beneath?
Diamonds, rubies, gold and more Hidden in the mountain store Born underground, suckled from a teat of stone Raised in the dark, the safety of our mountain home Skin made of iron, steel in our bones To dig and dig makes us free!
Come on brothers, sing with me! I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole Diggy diggy hole, diggy d Brothers of the mine, rejoice!

The sunlight will not reach this low Deep, deep in the mine Never seen the blue moon glow Dwarves won't fly so high Fill a glass and down some mead!
Stuff your bellies at the feast! Stumble home and fall asleep Dreaming in our mountain keep Born underground, grown inside a rocky womb The earth is our cradle, the mountain shall become our tomb Face us on the battlefield, you will meet your doom We do not fear what lies beneath!

Great epic adventure with dwarven protagonists. The world, the sights, the various peoples are well described and believable is this fantasy.
I'm sure everyone will compare this to The Hobbit with a diminutive hero sent on a mission to save their world.
But this story stands on its own and was a delight to read without twisting the tongue around unpronounceable names.
Jun 08, Patricia Crowther rated it liked it. For me, in this type of fantasy where a band gathers for a quest, one of my favourite things is the interaction and banter between those characters.
And this just fell flat in that respect. The dialogue generally was just not very sophisticated which was disappointing.
Dec 18, Elisabeth Schell rated it it was amazing. The Dwarves by Markus Heitz is a story about a dwarf by the name of Tungdil who was raised among humans in Grindlegard by a magus, Lot Ionan.
Lot Ionan sends Tungdil on a journey to run some long distance errands for him and over the course of his journey everything changes.
He meets fellow dwarves for the first time in his life and soon finds out that he was nominated to be a candidate for High King, his foster-father Lot Ionan is killed and Grindlegard is being taken over by the perished land The Dwarves by Markus Heitz is a story about a dwarf by the name of Tungdil who was raised among humans in Grindlegard by a magus, Lot Ionan.
He meets fellow dwarves for the first time in his life and soon finds out that he was nominated to be a candidate for High King, his foster-father Lot Ionan is killed and Grindlegard is being taken over by the perished land and Nudin, a magus that turned to the darkside in the search of knowledge.
It is up to Tungdil to set out on a quest to forge the only weapon that is capable of defeating Nudin: Keenfire.
On his journey he encounters orcs, älfs, and traitor dwarves who all stand in the way of the mission succeeding. The author introduces you into the elaborate society of the dwarves: their cuisine, hobbies and occupations, the set up of their families.
I would recommend this book to any fantasy fiction fans who are looking for another series to get into. If you liked the Lord of the Rings, The Dwarves might interest you.
Also, the reading is less difficult then Lord of the Rings. View 1 comment. Nov 24, Jessica rated it it was amazing. This book was by far and away the most interesting thing I've read in the last few months!
I thoroughly enjoyed it, and didn't mind staying up late just so I could keep reading it. The story follows Tungdil Goldhand on his adventures through Girldegard, first to find his folk and kinsmen, and then in an epic journey to save Girdlegard from those that would destroy it.
This was definitely a different take on Dwarves. Here they aren't just the little bearded people, they are THE bearded people!
Th This book was by far and away the most interesting thing I've read in the last few months! The characters were well thought out, and easy to identify with, and even to love in some ways.
It was so easy to get swept up in their battles, and want them to win! And yet it was also easy to feel bad for the villain of the tale.
Was he really a monster? Or was he perhaps to arrogant for his own good? I'd say that Dwarves is up there with Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series, at least for me.
But you should decide for yourself. I can't wait to start the next in the series! Jul 16, Bryan Alexander rated it liked it Shelves: fantasy.
I read this together with my year-old son. He prefers science fiction to fantasy, but is intrigued by dwarves. It's a fun read in that context.
We enjoyed some of the characters' schtick, the development of a fantasy world, the protagonist's growth into a leader, the defeats of various bad guys.
In a sense, it's a young adult book. The focus is on a young person, upon whose shoulders ever-escalating challenges are placed.
Adult society is fouled up, and can ultimately only be helped by the youn I read this together with my year-old son. Adult society is fouled up, and can ultimately only be helped by the young.
Here the world of Girdlegard is nearly destroyed by a demon-possessed sorcerer, after various leaders prove incompetent to stop him.
As a fantasy reader I was interested by the focus on dwarves out of the post-Tolkien fantasy repertoire.
Nothing earth-shaking or surreal, just a nice kind of travelogue or perspective shift. I loved the cover though! Oct 28, Drumerino rated it it was amazing.
An epic start to an epic book series! In my opinion the first book about the small stubborn drinkers and fighters was much different from the others.
Up to now I've read parts and I'm currently reading part 5. When I say, that the first part is different, I really mean it that way, and am not trying to say the others are not as good.
Just the basic atmosphere is different to the other 4 books. In the first book you can look forward to a fun story with a lot of humour.
Markus Heitz really takes An epic start to an epic book series! Markus Heitz really takes his time to introduce you to the story and the world and is always up for a good joke.
At least in German which was the language I read the book in I had to laugh a lot and I did not once have the feeling that Markus made a bad joke or that he tried too hard to be funny neither in any of the other books, his humour is priceless.
So if you like smiling and laughing, read it! If you don't like jokes embedded within stories, read it too! Even the story alone about badass nerd Tungdil is worth your time.
I wont say much about the story, because you can read it on the back of the book Hero is send out to do her stuff and saves the world. The end.
Prepare for some cool twists, especially in the other books. Markus didn't invent a whole new race system and his magic-rules are also very basic, but that does at no point lower the fun you have reading the story, because he plays with stereotypes and relations between the classic races Elves, Dwarves, Orcs and Humans like a boss!
Stop reading this, buy this book and the other 4 too and get into it! You won't regret it. Aug 20, Chris rated it liked it. Hmmm not bad, I just found myself disappointed at how like Lord of the Rings it was, a group of people of all races, a wizard who turned evil but couldn't see it, and an unspeakable evil that was encroaching upon the rest of the world.
Dwarve's and Elve's hate each other but in the end become friends and a child of a once ancient King of men leads an army of men united behind him.
The plot has been done before, and better by Tolkien. However, it turns out not to be a bad read once you get about Hmmm not bad, I just found myself disappointed at how like Lord of the Rings it was, a group of people of all races, a wizard who turned evil but couldn't see it, and an unspeakable evil that was encroaching upon the rest of the world.
However, it turns out not to be a bad read once you get about half way through it and the characters are well written, it's just a shame that it's nothing new.
Will I read the second in the series? Probably, but it's not something I will rush to buy. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.
